Gert Auväärt

Gert Auväärt is the Director of National Cyber Security Centre of Estonia (NCSC-EE) and the Deputy Director General of Estonian National Information System Authority (RIA), under which the NCSC-EE operates.

 

Mr. Auväärt represents the NCSC-EE both domestically and in international relations. In his role, he leads work on increasing cyber resilience across government and national critical infrastructure, awareness raising on cyber threats in the wider society as well as developing the Estonian Information Security Standard. As Director of NCSC-EE he is also responsible for overseeing the work of the national CERT and the Supervision Department, which is the regulatory body ensuring that important entities in Estonia comply with the cyber security measures stipulated in the Estonian Cyber Security Act.

 

RIA is the national entity participating in the Cyber Crises Liaison Organization Network (CyCLONe) responsible for cross-border cooperation with respect to large-scale cyber incident and crisis management as well as liaison with the relevant national authorities. Mr. Auväärt is the Estonian high-level CyCLONe Executive, empowered to discuss with both national technical (e.g. CSIRTs) and political levels on how to manage cybersecurity incidents and crises.

 

Before his current appointment Mr. Auväärt has served as a diplomat for 16 years, in various posts covering cyber security and wider security policy. He was serving as the Deputy Representative of Estonia to the UN Security Council during Estonia’s Presidency of the UN Security Council in May 2020 and June 2021. In February 2022 he was awarded the Order of Merit of the White Star by the President of Estonia for outstanding diplomatic service.

 

Mr. Auväärt holds a Master of Laws (LL.M) degree in Public International Law from Helsinki University, Finland and has completed Cyber Security Programs in George C. Marshall Centre of European Centre for Security Studies and European Security and Defense College.

 

He is married with two children. In his free time, he enjoys travelling and fishing.
